Ethan has some meetings this morning so I’m left to my own devices to explore the conference. I go to a panel about the newest trends in machine learning.

“Are you as bored as I am?” Pam sneaks next to me and whispers.

I nod immediately.

“Let’s get the hell out of here.”

I follow her to the resort grounds and we explore the area together.

“Pam?” A man walks toward us and greets her. He has sandy blond hair and kind eyes.

“Rick!” Pam waves at him enthusiastically. “Rick is one of my friends from school. He’s a marketing executive at an online retail company. Chloe owns her own pet accessories store.”

“Really? We currently sell baby products and have been trying to expand to pets. I would love to pick your brain.”

I feel a little embarrassed. All these people are way more successful than me but they want to “pick my brain.”

Rick invites us to have lunch with him at the restaurant. Rick is funny and nice, and he reminds me a lot of George. “Wow, your story is incredible,” he says, after learning about how I started “Take a Paws.”

My face gets warm as I feel his gaze on my face. “I mean,” he continues, “it’s such a fascinating story. It’s about pursuing your dreams, it’s about sisterhood, it’s about the decline of small-town America, and now it’s about saving your way of life. You’re the hero of your own journey, Chloe.” He takes a sip of his drink and winks.

I can’t tell if he’s serious or not, so I give him a small, shy smile. He’s not as good looking as Ethan, but he is kind and genuine.

“I need to talk to my colleagues, but I think we would love to do something with your store. Maybe bring your brand under our company’s umbrella? Or create a joint venture partnership? People love these hometown, mom-and-pop brands, but our platform can bring your products to the world.”

Pam’s eyes light up. “Chloe would love to do it!” I glance over at her and she crinkles her nose at me. “But she’ll need to discuss with her business partner and her lawyers, of course.”

“Great, I’ll do the same and we’ll be in touch. It’s been a real pleasure.” The word pleasure rolls off his tongue like molasses and he shakes my hand warmly. I feel my heart skip a beat as his thumb lingers over my skin.
